Miami International is the primary gateway to Latin America and the Caribbean from the United States and a major hub for American Airlines international operations. Its location in South Florida means afternoon thunderstorms — particularly between June and September — regularly trigger ground stops as lightning approaches the airfield. Miami is also sensitive to tropical storm and hurricane activity during the Atlantic hurricane season from June through November.
